Sheet Metal Workers Local 104 and Bay Area Industrial Training Fund (BAITF) operate a joint labor-management trust that provides skills training and knowledge to sheet metal apprentices. The BAITF purchased this existing 44,000 sf wood framed and concrete tilt-up structure in 2010 that served as a camping and RV retail center until the business closed its doors in 2008. The original building was constructed in 1983.
The BAITF’s vision and objective for this $ 7 million contemporary vocational arts facility centered on two criteria: (1) create a facility to effectively serve the apprentice program well into the future; and (2) design the facility as an example of industry excellence with a LEED Gold certification. A 45kw PV renewable energy system was a key element of this remodel.
Major spaces include classrooms, shops, welding lab, testing and air balancing (TAB) lab, sheet metal lab, offices, prep spaces, assembly hall and union offices.
